Gentle winter sports

Winter sports away from the slopes and powder snow

Winter is also a time in which you can take a more leisurely approach every now and then. Apart from action-packed days on the slopes or sporty freeride runs, it’s a good idea to take some time out to let the mind wander and take in the wonderful, wintry nature. A snowshoe hike or a fun tobogganing session with the whole family are particularly conducive to this. Get ready for gentle winter sports, fun and play in the snow in the region Obervellach-Reisseck.

Speeding down into the valley on the toboggan

What activity brings families endless fun in winter and is a great way of having a jolly downhill competition? THAT’S RIGHT: a tobogganing session in the snow-covered winter scenery. The toboggan run in Obervellach is 3 km long and runs from the Launsberg Alm all the way to the Waldschenke Hadt Inn down into the valley. A merry tobogganing session in moonshine is a very special experience. Apart from the run in Obervellach, the run in Mallnitz is also on top of our list. The Mallnitz-Jamnigalm toboggan run is one of the longest floodlit runs in Carinthia and a definite highlight for the whole family.

Eisstockschiessen

Bavarian curling – take aim

It is one of the oldest sports practised in the wintry, alpine regions since time immemorial. Bavarian curling has a long tradition and is highly popular with locals and guests alike. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a community or inn behind which there is not a curling rink, which is transformed into a smooth icy surface in winter. So grab an ice stock and join in the competition for the most coveted trophies in the region. The SV Kolbnitz stages its traditional community curling Championships every year on Three Kings Day. A great happening during which almost the entire population meets up to crown the local champion.

Ice-skating – get through winter smoothly

Gliding across a smooth icy surface with momentum and elegance, sensing winter in all its beauty, warmly dressed and with romantic thoughts in your head, ice-skating is a wonderful thing. The whole family delights in ice-skating, some even like to compete in heated ice hockey matches. Our ice-skating rink is located in Söbriach and also offers an ice hockey rink. The tennis court in Kolbnitz is transformed into an ice skating rink in winter, beckoning to spin stylish rounds before warming up again in the tennis cafe. The ice-skating rink in Napplach is located right next to the football pitch and also offers a great frozen surface, but without supervision.

Dorflift

Village lifts – skiing like in in days gone by

It doesn’t always have to be a large ski area or a day by the Mölltal Glacier in order to have fun on the slopes. The village lift of Kolbnitz by the Raunigwiese meadow has a length of 400 m, with a T-bar lift ferrying you up from the valley to the mountain The slope with its reliable snow conditions is excellently suited for practising and playfully learning the required skills, to then tackle one of the large ski areas not long after.

Winter holidays with the whole family consist of much more than ``just`` skiing, cross-country skiing or ski touring

In the region Obervellach-Reisseck, active families and nature loving winter sports fans have great opportunities to enjoy their time in the wintry mountains to the fullest.
